Challenge

With technological innovation and management efficiency as a core value within the business, CIMC iTECH recognised the significant benefits an integrated Internet of Things (IoT) smart container tracking solution could bring to their global logistics customers.

CIMC iTECH required a trusted IoT connectivity partner to provide global SIM coverage, the self-provision of card management services, industry-specific technology customisation, 24/7 support and flexible pricing options for multiple end-users and use cases.

In addition, the integrated container tracking solution should be flexible enough to accommodate multiple stakeholders that need to be kept informed of movement and location throughout the shipment cycle. The solution should also be able to monitor and communicate the environmental and physical conditions of containers and their contents to more effectively preserve time-sensitive goods like produce and to prevent cargo damage during transportation.

Solution

Console Connect’s IoT solution can easily be installed in a shipping container and is designed to provide not only location information from a single global SIM solution connected to multiple global networks, but also transmit temperature, humidity, door opening and shock information. This additional data is particularly useful for a variety of logistics customers with diverse shipment tracking requirements.

As the foundation of the IoT solution, CIMC iTECH’s connected telematics hardware device includes various sensors required to provide critical shipping and environmental data. This telematics hardware is connected via an international network of 2G, 3G and 4G mobile service and backed up by Console Connect’s own private high-speed international IP network - providing seamless connectivity and communication across all international shipping routes and destinations.

In addition, Console Connect IoT provides SIM activation, deactivation, traffic profile, traffic analysis and usage alert functions as well as overall IoT management services. Global support is provided by a 24x7 service desk team.

Results

Console Connect IoT’s service not only meets all of CIMC iTECH’s project requirements, but also simplifies their operations with a single service provider and one SIM solution that is compatible across multiple international cellular connectivity networks to provide global smart container tracking and environmental data communications.

With a core platform built on Console Connect’s international network foundation, CIMC iTECH’s IoT solution further benefits from both enhanced security and more resilient connectivity across multiple network paths. In addition, SIM management and control is provided over Console Connect IoT’s platform, enabling the full management of SIM connectivity devices.

Console Connect IoT also provides flexible pricing plans to meet CIMC and their third-party customers’ requirements for agile solution implementation on a case-by-case, business need basis.

Outcomes

Although IoT technologies are still relatively new in the market, Console Connect IoT has successfully assisted CIMC iTECH’s transition to their existing container products into an exciting new age of connected shipping and related solutions that are set to revolutionise the logistics industry.

Console Connect IoT is further committed to supporting CIMC iTECH’s future development needs, including e-SIM support and API integration of the SIM management function into their own management console.

“We are excited about the opportunities IoT is bringing to our industry and we see the benefits of a long-term partnership with Console Connect IoT to steadily bring more advanced logistics and shipping solutions to our global customers,” says Yáng xiăomíng, General Manager, Intelligent Container Sales.

“Our IoT partnership with CIMC enables us as technology providers to bring real value to the global shipping industry with a growing suite of smart solutions and services that benefit their end-users and customers,” says Craig Price, Senior VP, Mobility Products and Marketing at Console Connect.
